In spite of my laziness and the fact that I’m falling over the keyboard, ready to sleep for the next 12 days or so, I’m going to post a few pictures of my crazy garden. Be prepared to not be able to identify anything, because it’s a total jungle. I’ve started getting 2 zucchinis a day, the tomatoes are just starting to ripen, and the butternut squash vine has 16 baby squashes on it.
I pretty much don’t need to go to the supermarket anymore, except for twice a week, when I ride my bike to get a gallon of milk.

I’m utterly amazed. I didn’t know you could plant things so close together! Looks great.

Yay for you and your garden! Don’t you wish you could grow your milk? Me, I’m looking forward to the day when I can have a goat!! š

i really wish we were neighbors so i could “help” you eat all that produce. Looks fabulous!

Angela, I’m not totally convinced planting this close together is such a good idea. š It’s called Square Foot Gardening, and there’s a book about it. I think it’s similar to Intensive Gardening. It is really amazing how many veggies I’ve been getting out of my two 12×4 boxes, though. But for future reference, I won’t plant so many tomatoes all together next time.
Jana, I have little daydreams about goats and chickens and maybe a kuh, but my poor husband thinks it’s a terrible idea. What I really need is a few neighbors who would split the work caring for the beasts, and we could all share the benefits. Oh wait, isn’t that called a commune?
Kalli, I’ve already been foisting off green beans on the neighbors, and I’m pretty sure the zucchinis and tomatoes are going to get the better of me, so I wish you were my neighbor, too!

Yes, it looks jungle-y, but it looks beautiful!
I am so tempted to turn our front lawn into a vegetable patch next year.
And even though I am getting my food from a farm, not my garden, I am loving the smaller grocery bills this summer!

Forget the supermarket. Get a cow, man.

Oh, so pretty! Never mind the crowding. It might not be great for the plants, but it is a delight for the eyes. All those many shades of green! I did not detect any basil though. A garden? Tomatoes? Without basil? How odd!

Egads! Of course there’s basil! It’s just too short to be detected. In the top photo, there is purple ruffled basil on the far right corner, and genovese after three tomato cages, then another sweet basil after another two cages. And I have some in a pot, but it’s doing very poorly. I don’t know why. But indeed, there is basil.

this is so inspiring! thank you

I am glad to hear about the basil. It is so amazing how many kinds there are. I wish I could come over and taste some of your cherry tomatoes. They look delicious. I am so jealous of everyone who can grow edible things. It’s just not an option here in South Texas. Anything we plant gets eaten or killed by pests. Except for basil! Don’t ask me why because I really do not know.

Whoah! Just WHOAH!

Gorgeous!
I’m with you on the tomatoes–mine are too close together and will find it difficult to get sun (my tomatoes are taller than some of my kids) and I will have a difficult time harvesting them.
